Our hearts are broken for the victims and families of the horrific tragedy at an LGBTQIA+ Nightclub in Colorado Springs. Yet another act of gun violence has robbed countless people of their friends and family, and shaken an entire community’s sense of safety. Driven by our mission to advance equity and hope in our community, we can’t stand silently by as LGBTQIA+ people continue to be disproportionately victimized by hate crimes. We find it particularly egregious given the timing– with this act of violence occurring on the eve of Transgender Day of Remembrance – when we honor the memory of the trans people killed the prior year.
We condemn this act of hate and stand in solidarity with all those impacted. We mourn the loss of the 5 killed and extend our heartfelt wishes of recovery to the 25 people who were injured in Saturday night’s attack.
Acts of gun violence, particularly those against marginalized communities gathered in safe spaces, go against our unyielding belief in creating equity and hope in our community.
